GASLINI HOSPITAL OF GENOA

THE COLORS OF THE SEA

Dolphins, turtles and the many colors of the sea for a new welcome for young patients in the hemato-oncology surgical room at Gaslini Hospital in Genoa.

Dolphins, turtles and little fish will accompanyGaslini Hospital patientsduring treatments! The procedure room of the Hemato-Oncology Department has a new look thanks to the “Colors of the Sea” artwork created by Silvio Irilli of Painted Hospitals through the GaslinInsieme Foundation, the valuable support of the Tyrrhenum Cultural Association and the many supporters of the Hemato-Oncology Department.

The decoration of the procedure room is part of the larger “Gaslini a Colori” project, a project that includes a series of radical interventions with the intention of humanizing the hospital’s environments, so as to make the reception and stay of young patients more joyful.

"Helping young patients of Hemato-Oncology and Neuroncology wards cope with therapeutic treatment by bringing fantasy and color. With this goal, the Tyrrhenum Cultural Association, through a donation, contributed to the creation of the work "The Colors of the Sea" by Silvio Irilli. The sea, which is the basis of our name, is the undisputed protagonist with its creatures. Now dolphins, turtles and other friends of the sea will keep company with the many children who are forced to struggle from the very early years of their lives. We like to think that at a time as difficult and challenging as the one before the start of surgery, in their minds and eyes anxieties and fears can be replaced, if only for a few minutes, by serenity and peace."

"The surgical room is a special environment because children enter it before surgery, while awake and understandably frightened. Being able to give the health workers who will take them to the salon a chance to prepare them with a story that anticipates their encounter with the dolphins, turtles, and new friends of the sea who are waiting for them in the salon to greet them and cheer them on, support them, can create a moment of distraction that allows for a more peaceful preparation for surgery. It is an important work for doctors, it supports them in the delicate phase of approaching surgery, and that is why it was much desired by doctors and I am happy to have been able to respond to their request. A special thanks to the Gaslininsieme Foundation, the Tyrrhenum Association and the many supporters of the Hemato-Oncology Department who “signed” the first work of HOSPITALS PAINTED made with this specific in mind and I hope it can really be useful, so my wish for the children is that they can dive into “The Colors of the Sea”
