GIANNINA GASLINI HOSPITAL OF GENOA

THE GASLINI SUBMARINE

Once upon a time there was an underground tunnel leading from Gaslini Hospital to the sea, but it was destroyed, bumpy, dark, and sick children, especially those with walking problems could not use it. Thanks to the art of SILVIO IRILLI, that tunnel has become a dream that will have them boarding a submarine with a very specific goal: to banish their fears!

An emotional journey

BEFORE and AFTER

The Kids’ TG interview – TGCOM24

"It is a privilege, an honor, and a great thrill for me to bring color to the Italian excellence of the Gaslini and make it available to the little patients, their families, and the doctors. When I first saw the tunnel leading to the beach, with the exposed tubes, I immediately thought that that pathway could become a Submarine, with radar, controls and large windows where you could see the seabed, with the smiling dolphins, turtles and many colorful friends. I thank Dir. General Renato Botti and the entire medical staff for so enthusiastically embracing my project. Special thanks are also due to the Genoa Aquarium with Costa Edutainment, Silvia Salis and Fausto Brizzi whose valuable contributions have written their signatures in this work. The "Gaslini submarine" is ready for departure: children, indeed little Captains, welcome aboard a dream! A dream all in color, all for you!"

BEFORE and AFTER

"Gaslini is unique for many reasons, one of which is also its location on a hill sloping down to the sea, which allows it to have its own beach, contiguous to its park, where young patients, who can leave the wards for a few hours, have the opportunity to enjoy with their parents all the leisure and play experiences offered by the beautiful sea of Genoa. This is made possible thanks to the cooperation of CRIGG (the hospital workers' recreational club), which has been running the heliotherapy facility for many years and helping nurses and parents accompany children to the beach and access its services. We thank our employees who also make themselves useful in helping patients and families and the many supporters who make it possible for us to give children a special afternoon today. Special thanks go to the Genoa Aquarium with Costa Edutainment, to Coni vice-president Silvia Salis and her husband, director Fausto Brizzi, whose valuable contributions donated the new tunnel decoration to Gaslini Hospital."
Edward Garrone
President of the Giannina Gaslini Institute
“It is wonderful to see that thanks to so many friends at Gaslini we have been able to realize a project that a couple of months ago was just an idea, as of today instead leaving the inpatient ward for a few hours and entering the beach at Gaslini is an experience to remember: the child suddenly finds himself in an immersive environment, with portholes, control panels and sea creatures to simulate an underwater entrance passage to the beach, all child-friendly, a passage that creates awe with colors, sounds and lights, in accompanying the child from a place of care to the ultimate place of recreation: the beach. This is the first step in enhancing and fostering the encounter and relationship between our children and the sea: we plan to invest in equipment for rehabilitative purposes even within the heliotherapy establishment”
RENATO BOTTI
Director General of the Giannina Gaslini Institute.
“My husband and I thank you for giving us the opportunity to bond with such an important project that will fill the senses of the children and families who will cross their destinies with Gaslini, an excellence that makes us feel proud as Genoese and as Italians. Thank you!”
