FONDAZIONE SANTA LUCIA IRCCS – Rome

The Forest of Wonders for Neurorehabilitation at the Santa Lucia IRCCS Children’s Center.

Every year about 500 families begin complex neurorehabilitation pathways at the Santa Lucia IRCCS in Rome, dedicated to children with severe pathologies such as infantile cerebral palsy, rare genetic diseases, neuromuscular diseases and other neurological impairments. The Children’s Neurorehabilitation Center, in many cases attended on a daily basis, thus becomes one of the centers around which the lives of families are organized from the first months of children’s lives, for which the surrounding environments also play a crucial role.

That’s what inspired Silvio Irilli, founder of Painted Hospitals, in carrying out the artistic restoration of the Center’s waiting room now transformed into a “Forest of Wonders,” thanks to donations from companies Swan, Dexco, Sial, Trade Art, Bizzaglia, Sanitas, Consis and Sogesi, brought together through the valuable work of Leopoldo Tiberi.

An intervention that will help health care providers stimulate children’s imaginations and make the little ones “stay in the treatment spaces and their families” stay in the waiting area as comfortable and welcoming a time of care as possible.

“I am happy to bring a new message of welcome to an Italian excellence like the Santa Lucia IRCCS Foundation. For the waiting room, I thought of a scenario with nature, in which children can find characters and details from the history of Rome, with a central tree in 3D with a circular seat, to further characterize the work. I thank the management and the president of the Santa Lucia Foundation who together with the companies believed in this artistic project. From today, the little ones who will enter” the Forest of Wonders “inside the Children's Neurorehabilitation Center at Santa Lucia will have an environment closer to their dreams, which I hope will give them a smile”

“Our task as physicians and health professionals is to meet the very high expectations with which families come to us,” said Daniela Morelli, Director of the Children's Neurorehabilitation Center at Santa Lucia IRCCS, “and in this art and creativity can be valuable allies for the neurorehabilitation team composed of physicians, Neuro and Psychomotor Therapists of the Developmental Age, speech therapists, psychologists and neuropsychologists. In fact, an aesthetically welcoming and stimulating environment increases children's adherence to therapy and motivates them to engage in the cognitive, motor and behavioral tasks in their personalized plan”

“Caring for the person means not only dealing with infirmity but also caring for the sick person from a psychological and relational perspective: creating a space where well-being and acceptance arise from respect for human dignity is the best ally for fostering a pathway to overcoming the state of illness.”
