THE LIGHT OF THE SEA

A special artwork for the new bone marrow transplant department of the Gaslini Hospital in Genoa, Italy

Genoa, May 23, 2024 – As of Thursday morning, theGiannina Gaslini Institute can count on a new Bone Marrow Transplant Center on the second floor of Pavilion 12, a totally renovated space equipped with state-of-the-art instruments created thanks to a donation from the Conio family in memory of lawyer Emiliano Conio. The renovated rooms house six high-isolation beds in single positive-pressure rooms with high-efficiency air-cleaning filters and a centralized monitoring system, and the new ward also has a double room for donor hospitalization, as well as dedicated spaces for the comfort of parents in care. Artist Silvio Irilli, founder of Painted Hospitals, took care of the decoration of the rooms, including in the works of the 6 rooms, 6 stories from the “Big Book of Fairy Tales” illustrated by Giusi Capizzi, thanks to the availability of St. Paul’s Editions.

“The new department meets the highest international standards for both patient safety and care and for the work of the doctors and nurses. It will help maintain, and if possible improve the already excellent results Gaslini achieves nationally and internationally in the treatment of blood diseases and cancers in children. Special attention has been paid to making the environments cozy and comfortable with furnishings and decor inspired by the marine and fairy tale world by artist Silvio Irilli, to ease the burden of the long days of hospitalization.”
Dr. CARLO DUFOUR
Director of the Department of Oncology-Hematology.
“The new clinical unit of the bone marrow transplant center puts the patient and his or her family at the center so that they can find a hospitable, bright and colorful environment at such a delicate stage of their life journey, thanks to the work of Silvio Irilli. We who live this experience with the patient are certain that this important donation from the Conio family, will be of great help to all.”
